DAPHNE, Ala. — Mr. Ayres’ first-grade class has kicked off its Book-It Program. Each student who reads one book a night in October will get a free Personal Pan Pizza and a homework pass from Ayres.
Second-graders in Mrs. Conner’s class are taking an adventure through Africa. The class has discovered that the equator runs through the middle of Africa. Africa has many animals like lions, zebras, cheetahs, jaguars, hyenas and sheep in the dry desert areas. The class is excited about traveling to the Saenger Theater in Mobile to see the play, “Pinocchio,” on Nov. 18.
Mrs. Utsey’s second-grade class wants to thank Mrs. Suchan for coming in and working with our class to paint birdhouses. What a treat that was!
Congratulations to Walt Cassady for making it to the 10-point club in Accelerated Reading.
Also, congratulations to Madison Parke and Rusty Younkin, who were chosen for September’s Principal’s Pick for showing respect. They will get to attend the Principal’s Pick reception Tuesday.

Students in Mrs. Lindsey Blackman’s third-grade class are learning about different types of landforms in the United States. The students have learned that Daphne has lots of hills. The class is also learning about different kinds of penguins.
Third-grade students in Mrs. Blackmon’s class are learning about different types of communities. Students researched on the Internet to find the population of urban, suburban and rural communities in our area. Did you know that our community of Daphne is a suburb of Mobile and has a population of 20,000?
The DES Design Stars have been studying about portraits and self-portraits. Students have used geometric shapes to create portraits similar to Picassos and to show movement with lines. The students’ first self-portrait was a drawing of them dancing under a tree. For October, the Design Stars will be studying Mondrian, an artist from the 1940s.
Mrs. Nolfe’s third-grade Project Jubilee students are competing in their own Mini Metric Olympics this week. They will be challenged with activities such as the Paper Plate Discus, Paper Straw Javelin, and Cotton Ball Shot Put, just to name a few.
They will also be working with Model Magic to design and decorate their own Grecian pot.
