Mrs. Jackson’s kindergartners are finishing a unit on dinosaurs. They have learned about carnivores and herbivores, long necks and the T-Rex.
The class has also been talking about Mardi Gras and Groundhog Day.
Next week they will start a two week journey through outer space. They are going to create the solar system and maybe even build a rocket ship to take to our favorite planet.
Mrs. McGinty’s class is learning about the origins of Jazz Music and Mardi Gras. They read “The Jester Lost his Jingle” and drew their versions of a jester and brainstormed what makes them laugh.
Mrs. Clayton’s class took a field trip to see the “Pizza Symphony” and had a blast. They learned about different themes and variations of a song. On Friday they had a special treat when Walt Cassady’s father, Max Cassady, played his acoustic guitar. Cassady played different variations of songs and even played one of his favorite songs, “Forever Young.” The class would like to say thank you to Cassady for sharing his talent. The class will begin a balance-and-motion unit in science and learn addition and subtraction facts to 18.
First Grade will also perform in the PTA program on Feb. 11.
Mrs. Utsey’s second-grade class has gotten off to a good new year’s start!
The class has been studying Antarctica and penguins. They did an experiment to see how a penguin’s blubber works to keep them warm. The students have been working hard on two-digit addition and subtraction skills. The students have enjoyed reading Jan Brett’s books this month for an author study. They transformed a mitten into many varied and unusual things.
Congratulations to Alexis Marshall for being chosen as the Shining Star of the week. Also, congratulations to Josh Austin and Jazmine Harris for being chosen Principal’s Pick for January for showing trustworthiness.
Mrs. Bowen’s third-graders have started geometry, identifying solid figures, lines, rays and angles.
In social studies they are looking at the settlement of St. Louis and the transportation that led to the west expansion. In writing, the students are working on a project to celebrate Black History Month and Martin Luther King titled “I Have A Dream.” The Daphne Bulletin is coming out on Feb. 11 to do a story on this event.
All music classes have been playing the lummi sticks. The kindergartners and first-graders read a book, “Two Sticks,” by Orel Protopopescu. After the story they played the sticks to the theme song of “Scooby Doo.” The second- and third-graders have been learning to draw a treble clef and have been playing an ostinato on their lummi sticks.
