Next Monday, Jan. 21 is a school holiday in honor of Martin Luther King.

As you know, the entire campus at Spanish Fort Elementary is being temporarily relocated to various buildings in Spanish Fort due to lead contamination. Many of the teachers have lost everything, including personal supplies they kept in their classroom. Some of these things included books from their homes, computers, etc. A suggested list of items was given to each grade level. If you are able to send an item or two, it will be greatly appreciated. Monetary donations and gift cards will be useful as well.

In Mrs. Bowen’s third-grade class the students are are beginning a unit on energy. They are going to investigate where energy comes from, learn about the kinds of energy, and then talk about how energy is used every day. In math the class will complete a chapter on division. They will focus on author’s purpose in reading and find out why authors write books.

Crimes are being solved in Project Jubilee this quarter. Last week students worked with carbon printing to obtain their fingerprints and to solve the mystery of who was leaving treats for Mrs. Nolfe. This week they’re working with chromatography to help discover who left a “ransom” note and why. Next week the students will be visiting the crime lab at the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office in Robertsdale, where they will look at fingerprint analyses and get to meet one of the drug interdiction dogs and his handler.

A lot is going on in the library this month as the kindergartners begin using shelf markers to check out books. First-, second- and third-grade classes are wrapping up a unit on fiction books and beginning their study of non-fiction books. New books are added to the collection weekly. We look forward to a new shipment of books soon.

Our annual cookie dough fundraiser will kick off Jan. 28. Forms are due back Feb. 11. Let’s make this a record-breaking year for our library fundraiser.

As always, prizes will be awarded to our top sellers and don’t forget, the annual limo ride and pizza party for those prize-winning students. Good luck!
