My name is Keri Northcutt and I will be helping to report our school news each week.

I am 10 and I have a great family. I have my parents, a brother, a sister, a brother-in-law, a sister-in-law, a niece and another niece on the way.

I also have a dog, two cats and a hamster.

I attend Eastern Shore Baptist, where I sing in the choir. We plan to make a Christmas CD that will be sent to the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I look forward to a wonderful life while I help to bring school news to you each week.

Parents, please do not drop your child at school before 7:20 a.m.; no adult is assigned to be on duty until that time. We want your child to be safe and under adult supervision. We appreciate your support in this.

The Halloween Hop is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5 from 5:30 until 8 p.m. Admission is $5.

To get us ready for our Halloween Hop, students are going to be able to vote on their favorite “queen.” For 25 cents, a student may cast one vote to crown a “queen.” During the morning assembly on Oct. 5, the winning “queen” will be announced.

Our P.E. coach is Mrs. Elizabeth Jennings.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, she is working with our students on sports skills and sport-related games. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, students are playing new and exciting games that Mrs. Jennings has created.

The game of the week is sideline soccer. Students don’t realize how much exercise they are getting while having so much fun.

In Mrs. Benita Battle’s fifth-grade class, they have gotten off to a great start.

They have been learning and studying about all kinds of new things including the rock cycle.

This has been a fun learning experience for the whole class. They have learned about the different kinds of rocks such as igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary.

Some students even brought in rocks they found.

Rocks that are formed by heat and pressure are metamorphic. Rocks that are made of other rocks are called sedimentary.

The students learned that all rocks are made of minerals.

Don’t’ forget about the  Back-To-School Bookmark Contest called “The Amazing Around the World Book Adventure.” It is sponsored by Friends of the Daphne Public Library.

Loxley Art Council is sponsoring a T-shirt design contest.

The competition will select the official T-shirt design for the 2007 Arts and Crafts Show, which will be held Nov. 10 and 11.

The winning artist will receive a $150 cash award and the work will be replicated on T-shirts to be sold for the festival.

Please contact the Loxley Art Council or our art teacher, Ms. Majure, for submission requirements and an application form.

In Afterschool Care, Ms. Stephanie Johnson likes to play games with the kids. She also likes to help the kids with their homework.

Ms. Johnson likes to meet new children and spend time with them to get to know them.

“I really like to spend time with all the kids,” Johnson says. “Every day we get to eat very yummy snacks with some drinks like white milk, chocolate milk and juice. I love After School Care!”

Mrs. Michelle Henderson’s fifth-grade class is working hard in social studies this year.

The class is starting the year with a chapter on North American Indians. All throughout the week, the class has been doing small projects and activities.

First, they learned how to rain dance as the Western Plains Indians had, hoping it would bring rain for their crops.

Later, Henderson’s students wrote stories using the symbols that Indians used to write stories of their own. Soon, the class will complete the study of Indians.

Mrs. Cynthia Riley’s fourth-grade class has been working on two projects and learning about the five kingdoms.

Mrs. Linda Kay Loper’s fourth-grade class has been working on algebra and multiplication. They’ve also been working on combining sentences with conjunctions.

In Project Jubilee, they’ve been learning about Australia and the first people who lived there, which were Aborigines. They’ve also been working on Aborigine art called x-ray paintings.

Our school’s PTO is looking forward to the next fundraiser. Students will sell frozen desserts including cheesecake, brownies, and lemon squares, to name a few.

The sale will be held Sept. 28 through Oct. 14.

The purpose for this fundraiser is to help purchase Promethean Smart Boards and playground equipment.
