FOLEY – Foley senior Taylor Wheaton will continue his baseball career at Hinds Community College next year.
Wheaton signed with the Eagles on Monday at Foley High School.
“I put a lot of thought into it,” Wheaton said, “and it came down to where I felt most comfortable. Hinds was it. They offered to let me play shortstop and pitcher. I have slept much better since I made the decision.”
Wheaton finished his senior season with a 6-3 record and 82 strikeouts and hit .385 with a team-high 23 RBIs. He had a 2.10 ERA and 142 strikeouts in his last two seasons at Foley.
“Taylor works extremely hard and does the little things right,” Foley coach Kevin Madden said. “He always puts himself in situations where he can be successful. He comes to play every day on the field and he takes the game home with him and studies to be a better player.”
Wheaton also considered going to South Alabama, Birmingham-Southern, Alabama A&M and others.
“This is a great day,” Madden said. “I am very happy for Taylor. He gets to further his education and continue doing something he loves to do. I look forward to following his career at Hinds.”
