James “Jim” C. White, 72, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, due to complications following surgery.
Before retiring to Orange Beach, he was the “Voice of St. Louis” as host of the popular late night talk show on KMOX radio. Known as “The Big Bumper,” his voice reached across the nation every weeknight for 30 years, earning him the prestigious A.I.R. Awards for Best Talk Show Host and for Lifetime Achievement, as well inauguration into the University of Missouri Media Hall of Fame.
Born in Greensburg, Pa., he served in the U.S. Army. He began his career in radio in Pittsburgh and became a reporter at KDKA. After discovering Pleasure Island while cruising the “Great Circle” in 1998 on his boat, the Patty Wagon, he and his wife, Pat, fell in love with Orange Beach and decided to call it home. He was an avid ham radio operator and boater.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Pat White; and two daughters, Heidi and Holly; their families and many cherished friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 at St. Andrew by the Sea, 17263 Fort Morgan Road, Gulf Shores.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Christian Service Center, the Salvation Army, or the St. Andrew by the Sea Music Fund.
