White leads South to Senior Bowl win

MOBILE— Pat White had not played at Ladd-Peebles Stadium since he led Daphne to a win there his junior season. But getting back has always been on his mind.

“I’ve dreamed of playing in this game since I was a kid,” he said glancing around the stadium after the South’s 35-18 Under Armour Senior Bowl win.

“I sat in these stands and dreamed of getting the chance to play here in this game some day. I’m just thankful and grateful to everyone who helped make it happen.”

Returning to Mobile in his pro-debut and first NFL tryout, the former Trojan-Mountaineer only got four series to show his stuff, but led the South on two scoring drives in the home-team, home-town victory along with Vigor grad and WVU teammate Ellis Lankster who intercepted a pass and co-led in tackles.

White included a 39-yard TD strike to Ole Miss receiver Mike Wallace in his 95 yard passing, 32-yard rushing journey to the most valuable player award.

White shared the QB spot with former Hoover High foe and Crimson Tide starter John Parker Wilson and Clemson’s Cullen Harper.

Asked about the possibility of playing quarterback in the National Football League White said, “I looked at this as an opportunity to play against a lot of great competition. Had a chance to work with a great bunch of guys, a coaching staff that taught me a lot. I just want to keep working on getting better and improving and hoping that I get a chance. Been working my whole life to get there. We’ll see.”

Wilson, who scored the first TD of the night was named offensive player of the 60th Senior Bowl. North Carolina State’s Andre Brown received the outstanding player award for the South while Brian Robiskie of Ohio State won the team award for the North.

White, who finished his collegiate career as the NCAA’s all-time rushing leader, was 4-of-10 passing, Wilson was 7-of-13 and Harper went 2-of-5.

Central Arkansas’ Nathan Brown led the North QBs with a 9-for-15, 92-yard, 1 TD performance.

White's WVU teammate and South kicker Patrick McAfee was 5-fo-5 on PATs.

The game sat over 38,796 paying fans on a cold, damp night. Ladd-Peebles is set for renovation and a reopening in time for the University of South Alabama Jaguars’ first kickoff this fall.
