William Charles (Charlie) Brogdon Sr.
On the early morning of Dec. 8, 2015, Charlie passed away peacefully at his son’s home in Daytona Beach, Fla. Charlie was 81 years old.
Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Waymon Brogdon; his mother, Ethel Gilley; his first wife, Juanita Woodham Brogdon; and grandson, Casey Wyatt Brogdon.
Charlie was born in the town of St. Petersburg, Fla. on Sept. 27, 1934. Charlie was the oldest child of three children, Barbara Hamilton and Dottie Edmondson.
Though born in St Petersburg, Charlie grew up in Marianna, Fla., and enjoyed his youthful summers in the country with his Uncle Bob and Aunt Susie in the Bascom, Fla. area. He excelled in basketball and football at Marianna High School, while working for the local Coca-Cola plant delivering sodas. Charlie always cherished the close friendships he made during his school years.
After marrying his high school sweetheart, Juanita Woodham, Charlie enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955 and served as a jet engine mechanic for four years. Charlie and Juanita had two children, Pamela (Pam) Nan Brogdon and William Charles (Chuck) Brogdon Jr.
After leaving the Air Force, Charlie worked for Liberty National Insurance Co., and was transferred to Chattanooga, Tenn., then Fairhope, Ala. In Fairhope, Ala., Charlie attended First Baptist Church and volunteered as a greeter. He enjoyed meeting people with a handshake or hug, and was quick with his “corny” but clean jokes. “Why do cows have bells? Their horns don't blow!”
Charlie was very active in youth sports. He coached youth football, baseball and later was an umpire in the Babe Ruth League and a member of the “chain gang” at Fairhope High School football games. However, sports and fishing were his passion.
In the ‘90s, Charlie moved to Gainesville, Fla. and then to San Mateo, Fla., where he met and married Lennamae Parker. He enjoyed his golden years living on the St. John’s River, volunteering as a greeter at Dunn’s Creek Baptist Church, doing yard chores, fishing, tinkering and piddling and yes, watching sports.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Lennamae; son, Chuck Brogdon; daughter, Pam Strickland (Tony); three grandsons, Drew (Beth), Reid and Seth; three great-grandsons, Brady, Eli and Jake; two sisters, Dottie Edmondson and Barbara Hamilton; and stepmother, Mattie Lou Brogdon.
The memorial service will be held at Dunns Creek Baptist Church, 686 U.S. 17, San Mateo, FL 32187 on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, starting at 1 p.m. EST.
Following the service, a graveside service will be held at Oak Hill West Cemetery, 712 S. Palm Ave. Palatka, FL 32177.
