William David Cheatham, 76, born in Haleyville and a resident of the Pine Grove Community ,died Friday, Jan. 20, 2012 at his residence. He was a leasing agent for Continental Field Services.

In 1959 he was a recipient of the Carnegie Award for Heroism for saving three people from drowning in the Black Warrior River after their boat went off the Oliver Lock and Dam.

He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Chandler Cheatham of Pine Grove; his children, Debora Ann (Steve) Rigby, Steven Shea (Denise) Cheatham of Pine Grove, David Gregory Cheatham of Gulfport, Miss., Kimberly Diane (Barry) Homan of Bay Minette, and Michael (Janet) Cheatham of Clanton; his siblings, Betty Speakman of Centerville, James R. Cheatham of Haleyville, Robert D. (Raylene) Cheatham of Bowling Green, Ky., Joyce (Dennis) Farris of Muscle Shoals, and Arlene (Vernon) Beck of Town Creek; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Rigby, Heather (Lonnie) Sims, Bradley Homan, Keith Homan, Zack Homan, Bryce Cheatham, Patrick Cheatham and Matthew Cheatham.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to Bay Minette Intermediate School Scholarship Fund, 600 Blackburn Ave., Bay Minette, AL 36507.
