Willie King and the Liberators slated to play

Willie King and the Liberators will perform their unique brand of politically charged, juke joint blues on Sept. 2. The Labor Day Weekend concert is the second musical event presented by the Kudzu Music Group (KMG) and will once again be held at Fairhope’s American Legion Post 199 outdoor stage on beautiful Mobile Bay.

The show will begin at 3 p.m. with opening act, The Spaghetti Westerns. King will take the stage at 5.

King’s life is a testament to the power of music. Raised by sharecropper grandparents, he taught himself play on a crude, one-stringed instrument called a diddley-bo after hearing a local blues man. He said, “Man that stuff jumped on me, rode me day and night … all I had on my mind was to play the guitar.”

In 1967, King moved to Chicago to play the blues professionally. He became a student of many blues greats including Howlin’ Wolf, and admits that “Wolf” influenced his songwriting and performing more than any other.

He returned to Old Memphis, Ala. to give something back to his community and formed the Rural Members Association (RMA), a nonprofit foundation dedicated to preserving traditional African-American arts and skills.

The RMA has been nationally recognized for its achievements and has served as inspiration for like-minded organizations around the world.

King’s musical break came in 1989 with the release of his first Rooster Blues Records album, “Freedom Creek.” The CD received three awards from Living Blues magazine including Best Male Blues Artist, Best Blues Album and Best Contemporary Blues Album.

King was also nominated for several W.C. Handy and Blues Music awards.

In 2005, King was inducted into the Howlin’ Wolf Hall of Fame. He later appeared in Martin Scorsese’s blues documentary, “Feel Like Going Home.”

King’s current release, “One Love,” has met with critical acclaim and features cover artwork by Fairhope Street Artist, Bill Harrison.

His lyrics are far-reaching in their compassion for man and their warnings for modern civilization. His music is super-charged, juke joint blues with an infectiously danceable groove.

His Fairhope Music Festival performance in April was unparalleled as King ventured into the audience to play guitar and dance with children and adults.

Following the overwhelming success of their Memorial Day Concert featuring Beverly Jo Scott and Lisa Mills, the Kudzu Music Group is excited about their current venture. Barry Little of Nomad Productions Inc., Dan Therrell of Blue Mullet Web Services, Pamela Denham Marketing & Public Relations and Wade Wellborn of Dr. Music Records formed the alliance to bring quality musical acts to the Gulf Coast area.

The KMG is open to suggestions for future entertainment ventures and offers advertising opportunities for local businesses.

The Kudzu Café Beach Stage at the American Legion is open to all ages. Barbecue will be available inside the Legion and The Hot Dog Man will provide his services on the beach.

Boat access is available and a space jump will entertain the kids. Attendees should bring lawn chairs. No coolers will be allowed.

American Legion Post 199 is located at 700 S. Mobile St. in Fairhope.

Advance concert tickets are $15 in advance and $20 the day of the show. Kids 12 and under will be admitted free.

Tickets are on sale at Dr. Music Records, Page & Palette, The Coffee Loft, Bay Break, Jubilee Music and the American Legion in Fairhope; Bay Sound, Goldmine Pawn Shop and Ollie’s BBQ in Daphne; David’s Gallery (2 locations) on Pleasure Island; Picker’s Paradise in Stapleton; and Satori Coffee Shop and MMI Music in Mobile.
