ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Almost three months to the date of a devastating fire, Wolf Bay Lodge owners announced they are opening in a new location.
Previously known as Zeke’s Down Under, the waterfront restaurant will be home to Wolf Bay Lodge for the summer. The family restaurant will open its doors Monday, March 9 at 11 a.m.
Sisters and co-owners of the restaurant Charlene Haber and Alice Bretz lost everything they knew in a Dec. 7 fire that wiped out the restaurant in Elberta.
“It’s gone," Haber said. “If you go down there it’s nothing but dirt.”
Communities turned out to help the sisters and bring back the cornerstone business. After being offered 25 empty restaurants, the two decided on a place at Zeke’s Landing Marina in Orange Beach offered up by owners Tom Steber and David Stewart.
“Same food, same people, same great service,” Haber answered when asked if the new place would have the same characteristics. She said the only change to the place is the addition of a hook and cook.
Haber and Bretz said the staff, all of which have been working odd jobs or collecting unemployment, is excited and anxious to get back to work.
“It’s like a big family reunion,” Haber said. “When you see people day after day and then you don’t, it’s hard. It’s like your family moving away.”
The sisters are already working on bringing back the beloved restaurant they grew up in. The two women, who were kids when their parents took over the lodge in the 1970s, recalled sleeping in the back during late nights.
While the building is gone, the memories remain and they plan to revive Wolf Bay Lodge.
“A lot of people thought we were not building back since we moved down here,” Bretz said. “Everything is in place, we are just waiting on the engineering and they we’ll get started.”
The sisters plan to reopen the restaurant in Elberta this fall. Haber said while the Orange Beach location could be temporary, if business is strong they will stay at Zeke’s Landing Marina and operate two locations.
“This might be quite a door opening opportunity for us,” Haber said.
The new location, at 26619 Perdido Beach Boulevard, Suite 100, will be open Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
