Woman sought in connection with Thursday incident

DAPHNE, Ala. — Police are looking for a 40- to 50-year-old woman who last Thursday allegedly approached a 14-year-old girl with her vehicle, asking questions and attempting conversation with the child, who yelled and screamed while fleeing to safety.

"What had happened was the 14-year-old girl was leaving her (Lake Forest) home walking to a bus stop; a 40- to 50-year-old white female pulled up next to her and started asking her questions," Daphne Police Lt. Jud Beedy said. One such question, he said, was whether the girl had money for out-of-uniform day; the woman allegedly offered to give the girl money if she needed it.

"The little girl became upset and started yelling and screaming, which we tell people to do," in dealing with potentially dangerous strangers, Beedy said. "(The girl) was only a couple of doors from her house."

Police on Monday released a forensic artist's sketch of the woman (seen at the side of this story). The woman in question is considered a person of interest; no charges are expected to be filed in connection with this incident, Beedy indicated.

"There really wasn't a crime committed … but we're still trying to locate this person in order to find out what her intentions were," Beedy said, adding that the Daphne Police Department — which in a statement said this is a "priority case" — received several tips over the weekend.

Those with information on the case are asked to contact the police station at 621-9100.
