Samuel Riley Woodham, 78, a native of Calvert, grew up in Eight Mile, and a longtime resident of the Eastern Shore, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008.

He received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served his country in the Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean War.

He worked his entire career for International Paper Company. His work took him and his family to many locations in the Southeast, as well as to Puerto Rico, Canada and New England. He was an active member of Saint James Episcopal Church in Fairhope for 25 years. He served on the Daphne Planning Commission for 12 years and was instrumental in the development the Daphne Sign Ordinance, which helped shape the Eastern Shore into the appealing community that it is today.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Woodham; daughter Jane (Bill) Griffin; son Riley (Jami) Woodham; sister Elizabeth Cheeseman; brother Brannan Woodham; and four grandchildren, Jordan, Curt, Brannan and Sam.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Saint James Episcopal Church in Fairhope.
