Wrestling event to raise money for elementary school

FOLEY, Ala. — Some of the area’s toughest wrestlers are coming together tonight to duke it out, and it is all for Foley’s youngest citizens.

The new Foley Elementary School, set to open in February, has everything the students need indoors. In order to make the new facility complete, a new playground and fence is needed. And it is up to the community to help raise the money.

Father of a Foley Elementary third grader, Mark Cox, has organized a fundraising event in the hopes of raising the funds for these projects.

“To get this done it takes a little bit of everybody because it’s our kids,” Cox said.

The event will include appearances by wrestlers Bullet Bob Armstrong, Robert Gibson, Percy Pringle III and Wildcat Wendell Cooley, along with many others.

“The focus is to have a wrestling event with Ultimate Wrestling out of Pensacola, Fla.,” Cox said. “All proceeds from the door will go to the Foley Elementary school for the playground project.”

The event will be held at the Foley National Guard Armory, thanks to the donation of the Guard’s facility and time at the event.

“Everything is taken care of in terms of the event,” Cox said. “All we need now is people.”

Cox hopes to raise around $3,000 from the proceeds, but is still expecting several donations.

“We’ve seen donations from as far as Gulf Shores,” Cox said. “This is about the fact that our children are students there and we’re trying to help raise money for us to get this playground for our children with funds that have been used toward the school in areas that had to be set aside for the building.”

Local businesses such as South Baldwin Regional Medical Center have also made donation toward the project.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with Bell time at 7 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, Military $8, Children six to 12 $6, children under five and wheelchairs are free. Gift cards will also be given away at the event.

If unable to attend the event donations can be made to Foley Elementary School, simply specify playground or fence project at the bottom of the check.
