WWII memories shared at Daphne Elementary School

Posted

Sally Megginson’s third graders from Daphne Elementary School were privileged to have Clyde P. Ussery come and talk to their class Oct. 5,.

He told them about  his recent trip on the Honor Flight of South Alabama which recently  flew him and his granddaughter, Amy Byrd, to Washington, D.C. Mr. Ussery is the great grandfather of Harrison Byrd, a student in Mrs. Megginson’s classroom.

Mr. Ussery will soon be 91, and continues to be very active. He brought an American flag to show the class that was flown over the U.S. Capitol Building on Sept. 11 in honor of him as a veteran. He also told the students about his adventure to Washington, D.C., to visit the WWII memorial as well as some stories about his life in the U.S. Navy during the war.

The class had written letters to him thanking him for his sacrifice for our country so many years ago and Mr. Ussery read them on the flight to Washington. Upon returning from the flight Mr. Ussery expressed a desire to meet the students, so his granddaughter arranged the visit.

The visit ended with him giving each student an American flag and teaching them that freedom is never free.
