SPANISH FORT, Ala. — In his book, “Hell’s Guest,” Col. Glenn D. Frazier doesn’t mince words.

Consider, for instance, his recounting of a direct order to remove the American Flag when surrendering to Bataan troops.

“As we lowered ‘Old Glory,’ everyone in witness had tears running down their faces ‘Old Glory’ was folded in its proper form and placed in a special sealed container. We all gathered around and asked God to protect it until we returned to get it. My soul was buried on that hill in Bataan when we lowered ‘Old Glory’ into its grave.”

What followed were three-and-a-half-years of “wounds and beatings” in “slave labor camps.”

Frazier goes on to describe his elation on Sept. 4, 1945, as he and 20 brethren freed only the day before from their labor camp arrived in Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. He recounts the chills that run up and down his back upon seeing the American flag flying high above the Grand Hotel.

“I am still proud to be an American. I have not given up on our country as some have, who have moved to other lands. I have made up my mind to try, within our system, to make it a better America. America has served me well. It is my home.

“From all I have learned from my travels, I know there is no other land as great. I thank God for the opportunity to live in this great land. I will oppose anyone that tries to make America anything but the land of the brave and the land of the free,” he writes.

Frazier will be the keynote speaker during the Daphne-Spanish Fort Kiwanis Club’s Memorial Day remembrance ceremony. Kiwanis member Carolyn Parham said copies of “Hell’s Guest” will be available for purchase, and Frazier will sign copies.

The event begins at noon May 25 at Ryan’s in the Eastern Shore Centre.

Parham said guests are invited to attend the ceremony. Anyone interested in learning more, can contact her directly at 251-621-2996.
