LOXLEY — For the past four years, the Loxley Art Council has sponsored a Community Yard Sale to help raise funds for classes and projects the Art Council sponsors.
This year’s event, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Loxley Municipal Park, will add the support of future artists to its list of fundraising efforts.
“This event alone has raised over $25,000 in the last four years for the Art Council,” said Joey Knight, events coordinator for the Town of Loxley.
Since there was money left over after funding art classes, the City Rhythm Big Band and the L.A. Community Theater, the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization decided to give grants to students interested in the arts.
Three $1,000 grants will be given out this year, Knight said. The group hopes to increase that number as the event continues to grow, he said.
The grants, which will be given out this summer, will go to graduates from the Central Baldwin area, including Robertsdale High School, Central Christian, Faith Presbyterian, home-schooled students and other private school graduates, who have completed at least one semester in college, Knight said.
“We want to make sure these grants are going to student who are committed to studying the arts,” he said, “and not drop out after one semester as so many students do these days.”
The grants are open to students studying the fine arts, painting, music, photography, etc., and the dramatic arts, Knight said.
“I think we’ll even accept someone who wants to study graphic arts and enter the field of advertising,” he said.
The Arts Council supports all areas of the arts in Loxley, Knight said.
The group, which meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of every month at the Civic Center in Loxley, has provided funding for the lights and stage curtains for the Civic Center.
Regular art classes, such as the watercolor class which meets at 1 p.m. every Monday and oil painting class which meets at 1 p.m. every Thursday, and a digital photography class, which meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, are supported by the Arts Council.
The group also supports the City Rhythm Big Band, which meets monthly and holds a concert at least once a month. The next performance will be April 19.
The L.A. Community Theatre, which will host a children’s production Aug. 8-10, is also supported by the Arts Council.
The Council is also planning an arts and crafts program for children this summer at the Civic Center.
Booths are still available for this weekend’s Community Yard Sale. A 15-foot by 15-foot booth is available at a cost of $10.
Another fundraiser, a bluegrass festival, is being planned for November.
