FOLEY – McGill-Toolen held Foley to just 130 yards of offense as the Yellow Jackets stung the Lions 16-7 in Class 6A Region 2 play on Friday.
“They were just whipping us up front plain and simple,” Foley head coach Todd Watson said of McGill’s defense. “They played more physical than we did. That was the key to the game.”
The Yellow Jackets led 3-0 at the half after holding Foley to just 41 first half yards. They scored on their first possession of the second half when quarterback Preston Messer scampered eight yards for a touchdown after a nine-play, 71-yard drive.
Foley’s lone score came with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter when quarterback Darius Powell hit Kalif Koen on a screen pass for a 20-yard touchdown. The touchdown and Jorge Santa Maria’s extra point made the score 9-7 Yellow Jackets.
Foley forced McGill to punt on its next possession, then gave the ball right back near midfield when Ellis May picked off a Powell pass. Derric Burrell scored on a 67-yard run on the very next play to give the Yellow Jackets the 16-7 lead. The Yellow Jackets then recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock to finish the game.
Michael Holmes had an interception for Foley in the second half.
Foley fell to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in region play.
The Lions will host defending state champion Prattville on Friday.
