SPANISH FORT, Ala.— The Planning Commission Monday unanimously voted to give a positive recommendation to the City Council for approval of a site plan for an Eagle Scout project at Spirit Park.
Boy Scout Troop 109 will be responsible for the construction of a $30,000 flag-pole project that will comprise three flags, a wall and seating area, according to permit clerk Donna Dunning.
“It’s a very worthy project,” Mayor Joe Bonner said. “Very favorable from the City Council.”
The project may be broken into phases since it is costly, Dunning said.
“From an engineering standpoint we see no reason not to move forward,” Martin Pitts, city engineer, said.
Funding for the project will be discussed with the council.
“When I took on this project I knew it was going to be an expensive thing,” applicant Jeremy Collins said to the commission. “I don’t expect for this to all be done at once.”
Also at the meeting, planners reviewed amendments to the planned unit development for The Highlands of Spanish Fort.
Design standards were revised after a discussion at a work session.
A calculation formula for mitigation trees was changed and mitigation trees should have a minimum height of 10 feet and a minimum diameter breast height of 2.5 inches, according to the revised large scale planned unit development for The Highlands of Spanish Fort.
In the event that preservation trees are damaged or cleared, any fines established by the city may be enforced by the city, according to the planned unit development.
The penalties and incentive sections were amended; incentive sections said that a reduction of parking shall be allowed.
Also amended in in the planned unit development was the realignment of Redmond Road. The new plan will affect fewer wetlands and will save money, Dunning said.
The next regularly scheduled planning commission meeting will be held at 6:30 Monday, Dec. 8 at The Gathering Place—at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and 31—in the Prodisee Center.
