Young Authors book reveal

FOLEY — Foley Intermediate School’s fifth and sixth grade students were given the opportunity to participate in the Legends and Kids Young Authors Program this school year. Sarrell Dental Center, a nonprofit for Alabama’s children and sponsor of this program, partners with Dr. Joseph Profit of Atlanta’s NFL Alumni Association to present this opportunity to one school in the state each year. Dr. Profit is a former player for the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons.

He and his team of educational consultants worked with the students for three days brainstorming, writing and illustrating to develop the next edition in the series titled, “The Adventures of Dr. Marlo.” Foley Intermediate’s 450 students became published co-authors to a story they gave the title, “Dr. Marlo Saves the Day in his Fight against Tooth Decay.”

On May 23 and May 25, the book was revealed to the students and faculty at their end of the year awards day ceremonies.

Dr. Profit was in attendance and addressed the crowd applauding the students’ achievement of becoming young published authors saying, “(These) children were able to accomplish something in six months that took me seven years.”

Dr. Profit is author to the book, “Fields of Success.” He began the Legends and Kids Young Authors Program with the support of Sarrell Dental Centers to emphasize to students the importance of academic and creative success, in addition to athletic success. Both organizations also advocate for the contribution that proper health, especially oral hygiene, makes to these successes. Giving students the opportunity to experience the process of publishing a book reinforces the idea that with hard work and dedication any goal can be conquered.

Foley Intermediate School administrators, principal Branton Bailey and vice principal Shannon McCurdy, support their students whole-heartedly and were eager to present the school with a new learning experience by undertaking this project. Many local community leaders joined in the book reveal ceremony to show their support of the students, including Congressman Bradley Byrne, District 95 Representative Steve McMillan, Mayor John Koniar, City Councilman Vera Quaites, Baldwin County Board of Education President Shannon Cauley and Foley Middle Principal Danny McDuffie.

Copies of the book can be found at local school and city libraries across Baldwin County. “Dr. Marlo Saves the Day in his Fight against Tooth Decay” is also available for purchase at retailers such as Amazon.com.
